Thanks for the thoughtful essay. I don't know what the right thing to do is, but I appreciate your positivity. It is kind of scary to see the incoming administration normalized by mainstream performers given what we now know about living under a Trump presidency first hand. It's like facts don't seem to matter to people anymore, just vibes.
We are very strongly living in a vibe culture right now. One of my dear friends has a political podcast called vibes only exploring just that. It’s also a tool used by those in power to sow discord. We just have to keep being informed and smart about our choices!
I don’t have to cancel Carrie because I don’t like her music. As for the Village People and all others who chose to take part in the Nazi rally…..FUCK ‘EM
Please give the woman a break. Perhaps we can assume that she is honoring the historic nature of the changing of the guard? We shouldn't give up our traditions that are part of making this country what it is (like Fourth of July fireworks). Despite what our new president thinks, it is not a celebration of him, but the continuation of the Democratic process. Here endeth the lesson😉
This thoughtful essay on an important topic is much appreciated. Thank you for having the conversation.
Although boycotts and canceling have been around forever (google 1980s Coors boycott), it’s a clumsy weapon that often leaves the group using it politically isolated and unable to make the changes in law and cultural opinion we want.
We need to have a purpose that non-queer people can get behind WITH us, things like freedom from violence, job protection, and housing.
Cary Underwood obviously has connections to the people in power now. Instead of giving her the middle finger, maybe we ask her to help us move forward on one or many of the issues we are working toward.
If the only issue we are working toward is finding better ways to say fuck you! We may feel better with each FU, but we are not going to get any laws changed.
Purity politics or “Cancel Culture” limits the people we can work with to get our concerns addressed. And for the reason, I'm always wary of pulling that trigger.
Absolutely- isn’t she a treasure? Let’s bury her
